About The Mill Restaurant

A locally owned establishment for Great Food, Music and Cocktails since 1962

History

Keith Dempster opened The Mill Restaurant in 1962 as a coffee house/restaurant/folk music venue. Over the years it became the center of an Americana music community in Iowa City that has achieved national and international fame. The Mill also became known for great pizza and sandwiches.

The Present

At the end of June, 2003 The original owners, Keith and Pam, closed The Mill. But The Mill was important to many people in Iowa City, where the local landmarks are steadily replaced with cookie-cutter buildings and chain restaurants. On July 19, 2024 we reopened and will preserve The Mill for as long as possible.

Our Goal

We'll maintain, and even improve upon, all the things that make The Mill a special place in Iowa City. We will be a home for many great area musicians and artists. We'll bring nationally renowned artists to this intimate venue. Our friendly staff will serve great food and drinks at a great price.
