w/Filligar, Western Front, Old Man Charlie The 4onthefloor’s new album, Spirit Of Minneapolis, evokes the spirit of American rebellion. That same pioneering spirit that brought us everything from modern aviation to rock & roll. Harnessing that spirit, the band is using it to break down modern music’s barriers down to our basic musical traditions. That ageless sound of rock & roll isn’t what it used to be, but the rumble of stomping feet emanating from Minneapolis is an omen of great things on the horizon. Boston’s RSL music blog named Filligar one of the Top 8 Live Acts in America alongside fellow Windy City rockers Wilco. Last summer they were hand-picked by Counting Crows to join their Outlaw Roadshow tour, and following this year’s CMJ Music Marathon in New York,SPIN Magazine named Filligar one of music’s “Next Big Things.” Time: 9:00pm. Originally from Chicago, Illinois, Open Mike cut his teeth rapping with fellow broad shoulder underground MCs before moving to Los Angeles in 2004. He has since settled in with LA’s Project Blowed, co-founding the crews Thirsty Fish and the Swim Team, while earning a rep as both an intelligent rhyme writer and a formidable battle MC. Gifted with a facile style, knack for droll wordplay, and penchant for penning memorable hooks that recalls fellow Blowed alums Mikah-9 and Abstract Rude, Open Mike Eagle presents art rap for the masses. | Fri 05.31 | Tilly and the Wall | Tilly and the Wall in
w/ Special Guests: No Coast Since the group’s inception in Omaha, Nebraska more than a decade ago – recording its first sides with Conor Oberst of Bright Eyes in his basement – Tilly and the Wall has managed to ingeniously combine folk-rock strumming, schoolyard sing-along rhymes, unison male-female vocals and rapid-fire beats via the amplified tap-dancing of Jamie Williams Pressnall, who fulfills the role of a traditional percussionist in a joyfully unorthodox manner. Their lyrics are as quirkily imaginative as the arrangements, embracing a kind of fearlessness and freedom in matters of the heart, the body and the soul. On stage and on record, singers Kianna Alarid Cameron and Neely Jenkins, keyboardist Nick White, and singer-guitarist Derek Pressnall evince a clear-eyed positivity, meant to keep darker forces at bay, to ameliorate the everyday struggles and setbacks we all face. The most life-affirming song of their early years was pointedly called “Night Of the Living Dead” and audiences everywhere would join them in the live-set closing pledge of “I want to fuck it up!” — boisterously declaimed en masse each night. Time: 9:00pm. Admission: $12 Advance / $15 Day of Show. Age restrictions: 19+ After 10 pm. Buy tickets |

w/ Special Guest: Reldnips Dan DiMonte is a multi-instrumentalist (guitar/trumpet/piano/drumset/bass guitar/ukulele/harmonica/various percussion,) vocalist, and composer from the Chicagoland area. He has played with many projects in the Iowa City area, including jazz groups, church groups, and local/touring acts. Also, with his project “The DiMonte Brothers Band,” he has played various venues around the Chicagoland area and Northwest Indiana. His current project “Dan DiMonte and the Bad Assettes” is comprised of some of the best musicians from the Iowa City area and beyond, and together they make music with echoes of the old jazz greats, funk projects of yore, modern and vintage rock bands, the singer/songwriters young and old who tell the stories of the common man, and some new flavors never heard before. “Whether it’s playing stadiums or playing for your mom, I feel that music is a beautiful gift that must be experienced and shared with people through not only recording albums to share, but live, energetic performances. For me, being on-stage is unlike any other feeling in the world, and when anyone finds their “state of yo” as I have found in performance, they hold onto it when they have it for as long as possible, and if, Heaven forbid, they lose it, they begin longing to possess it for the rest of their days. I’ve found my promised land. It’s unlike anywhere else in the world. I feel unstoppable, yet ridiculously vulnerable. Adored, yet judged. Euphoric, yet manic. I intend to chase my realized passion for the rest of my life.” Time: 9:00pm. Admission: $6. Age restrictions: 19+ After 10 pm. |

| Sat 06.15 | Pressed And | Pressed And in | |
w/It Is Rain In My Face, Cuticle Pressed And is the intriguingly named collaboration of Andrew Hamlet and Mat Jones, one of the hydra heads of a burgeoning southeastern electronic scene that we’ve often seen in association with North Carolina’s Denmark Records. Their debut LP, Imbue Up, is a testament to that emergent milieu; some are calling it post-chillwave, but the reality is a more complex interplay of primal effects and synth landscapes, rife with tension in a cascading sequence of loops and glowing drones. This is an album of sensation, that lingers and mingles in ways you rarely expect and despite its coherence never quite master. “It’s as if early Chemical Brothers had gone chill-wave [...] Trippy? Very.” -CMJ “…for the fans of all that’s chilled in the electro freezer after its been chopped and screwed good and hard.” -Impose “Half witch house (the good half, we should say) and half Timbaland.” -Prefix Magazine Pressed And: Raid from Nathaniel Whitcomb on Vimeo. Time: 9:00pm. Admission: $7. Age restrictions: 19+ After 10 pm. |

I Am Gemini (out February 21, 2012 via Saddle Creek), the band’s seventh LP, is the follow-up to 2009’s critically praised Mama, I’m Swollen, which caught the attention of publications including Alternative Press, Billboard, Playboy, Rolling Stone, and Time Out New York, among others, and earned the band their network television debut on The Late Show with David Letterman. The band is also known for their vital, magnetic live show, earning rave reviews from outlets including the Cleveland Scene’s C-Note music blog (”[Tim Kasher’s] effect on the crowd was chilling last night…Cursive was focused and on-spot, composed and gripping”), Nuvo Weekly (“…the five-piece slashed through a near-perfect set of songs from their last nine years of albums”), and the Orlando Sentinel’s Soundboard blog (“…the band still knows how to rock on stage…[Cursive] thrashed away with an abandon that heightened the passion of Kasher’s dense, emotionally charged wordplay.”). | Tue 06.25 | Dent May | Dent May in
DENT MAY+ Recent singles on Forest Family and Paw Tracks have found Dent abandoning the ukulele in favor of cosmic synths, funky guitars, analog drum machines, loopy bass lines, and massive vocal harmonies. He played all the instruments on his new album “Do Things, which was recorded at the Dude Ranch and in a friend’s rural cabin by a cotton field. He has described the album as “Pet Sounds for the Smirnoff Ice generation” and “a wedding reception band on acid” via his Twitter account. DEAD GAZE+ Furlow explains that he records “wherever I can be alone”. His intention is always to “try to capture a very memorable moment”, a spontaneous approach which home recording makes possible. The DIY ethos that goes into Furlow’s recording process shouldn’t feed into the lo-fi genre-trapping, though, as every sound Furlow commits to tape is deliberate. Dead Gaze’s trademark over-compressed sound is one which has come from Furlow’s belief in the importance of production as another instrument; “I think texture is something that is just as important as writing nice melodies and recording big songs”. Time: 9:00pm. Admission: $8. Age restrictions: 19+ After 10 pm. |

| Wed 06.26 | Finnders and Youngberg | Finnders and Youngberg in | |
w/ Special Guests: Burlington Street Bluegrass Band Anchored in the northern front range of Colorado’s Rocky Mountains, this band plays music of its time and place, at a high level. Songwriter and guitarist Mike Finders {say finn-ders} is a two-time winner of the Merlefest Songwriting Contest. Erin and Aaron Youngberg {yes, that’s right}, were founding members of Hit and Run Bluegrass Band, which won both Telluride and Rockygrass band contests in 2003, as well as subsequent SPGMA and IBMA honors. Fiddler Ryan Drickey is a former Rockygrass Fiddle Champ and a much-sought session player with the likes of Matt Flinner and Michelle Shocked. Rich Zimmerman’s mandolin work in the Colorado-based Slipstream is widely heralded as a founding voice in the CPG style of bluegrass. With such combinations of musicianship, creativity and experience, the band is finding some serious momentum at the close of this year. Time: 7:00pm. Admission: $10. Age restrictions: 19+ After 10 pm. |

| Thu 06.27 | The Candymakers | The Candymakers in | |
w/ Firesale, Rude Punch Leaning on the traditions of `60s Motown and Stax, together with the classic groove bands of the 1970s, The Candymakers make no secret of their desire to have some fun while making their music, and in turn, share as much of the joy as they can with their audience. I imagine live on stage, in front of an enthusiastic crowd, the Davenport, Iowa six-piece are damn near irresistible. It’s to their eternal credit that they’ve managed to transfer all that bustling energy into studio recordings, and their songs leap from the speakers like timeless productions by Frank Wilson and Steve Cropper. Time: 9:00pm. Admission: $7. Age restrictions: 19+ After 10 pm. |

Daddy-O has developed a super-funky, soulful style of Blues that definitely gets the place jumping. Time: 8:00pm. Admission: $7. Age restrictions: 19+ After 10 pm. |

| Sat 06.29 | Stuart Davis | Stuart Davis in | |
Lakeville, MN, native Stuart Davis is an alternative folk-rock singer/songwriter with a yen for esoteric topics. (In the past, he has drawn influence for his songs from the Tao Te Ching, the Tibetan Book of the Dead, and transpersonal psychologist Ken Wilber.) Growing up, he was influenced by the sounds of Elvis Costello, Richard Thompson, XTC, and Bob Dylan. In 1990, he released a cassette-only album that picked up some airplay in Minneapolis. He followed that in 1991 with the album Idiot Express. Big Energy Dream came out the next year, receiving airplay on nationally syndicated shows such as World Café and Davis began touring the Midwest. In 1993, he dropped out of college to become a full-time musician. (That same year, he also entered treatment for alcohol and drug abuse.) In 1996, Davis signed to Triad Records in the U.S. and Blue Rose in Europe, releasing Nomen Est Numen. Kid Mystic came the following year, followed by the live effort 16 Nudes: A Collection of Live and Acoustic Cuts, which was recorded in Ames, IA. In the late ’90s, Davis moved to California and started his own label, Post Apocalyptic Records. The venture was spurred to life when he offered 20,000 dollars in shares of his Bright Apocalypse album to fans on his email list. The stock sold out in several days, leading to an entirely fan-run label. Davis released a self-titled album in 2001. Time: 9:00pm. Admission: $10 advance $12 day of show. |
w. Dave Zollo Luella and the Sun, one of Nashville’s must see emerging acts defies any singular description. Music Connection Magazine described them in geographic terms as “feverish, bluesy jungle territory.” Regardless of how they are characterized, one certain thing is that their sound ignites a soulful blend of blues-hop, gospel and rock, merging a fearless sense of abandon and equal parts restraint. The band deftly works as a unit and every note has purpose, combining minimalist attitude with raw emotion – and even in their most unguarded moments, there’s a smoldering vulnerability that’s unquestionably mesmerizing. | Thu 07.11 | Meat Puppets | Meat Puppets in
w. TBD For over 30 years, legendary desert punks the Meat Puppets have carved a unique niche for themselves with an unmistakable blend of cosmic country and punk rock filtered through countless acid trips, dog-eared comic books and their eclectic record collections. Along the way they’ve earned the admiration of a pantheon of critics and rock music peers. The certified classics reach back to Meat Puppets I, II, and Up On The Sun and have been book-ended by recent releases Sewn Together and Lollipop. With brothers Curt and Cris Kirkwood reunited in 2009 and the 2012 release of the band’s graphic tell-all biography, Too High to Die, the Puppets’ iconic status seems assured. But the drive to create goes on and fire still burns; the band’s live shows and new material, including their 14th studio release, Rat Farm (April 16 release via Megaforce Records), are as colorful, vital and undiluted as ever. w/ Abbie Sawyer The music of You Knew Me When parades between a fusion of progressive indie-rock and jazzy piano driven compositions, all infused with a myriad of pulsing and stirring beats. Karisa, an elementary school music teacher, provides the piano and lends her classically trained vocals to the music, while Cie, an event production and marketing manager, supplies the guitar, additional vocals, and rhythmic nuances. The cumulative result is a musical style that blends a singer-songwriter soul with a pop/rock mentality. Time: 8:00pm. Admission: $7. Age restrictions: 19+ After 10 pm. |

| Wed 07.17 | Dave Arcari | Dave Arcari in | |
Slide guitarist & songwriter Dave Arcari’s alt.blues sounds owe as much to trash country, punk and rockabilly as they do pre-war Delta blues and have been showcased via six internationally-acclaimed solo CD releases. Nobody’s Fool was recorded in Glasgow, Scotland and Helsinki, Finland. The new album features collaborations with Finnish musicians Juuso Haapasalo (bass) and Honey Aaltonen (drums) and Scottish fiddle player Jamie Wilson. As well as Arcari’s trademark National slide guitar playing and original material, Nobody’s Fool presents another side of Arcari with ‘normal’ guitar and some material from key traditional, geographic and musical influences. Time: 9:00pm. Admission: $8. Age restrictions: 19+ After 10 pm. |

| Fri 08.23 | Mary Gauthier & Ray Willie Hubbard | Mary Gauthier & Ray Willie Hubbard in | |
Englert Presents: Mary Gauthier & Ray Willie Hubbard at The Mill In conversation and in public, Mary Gauthier comes off as a practical, no-nonsense woman. Stoic, even. Which wouldn’t seem unusual, except for the fact that her songs carry so much emotional punch, they can leave you staggering. She has a way of burrowing into that hole so many of us carry inside our souls, and emerging with universal truths that show we aren’t so alone after all. Yes, Ray Wylie Hubbard is a Texas singer-songwriter, complete with the classic trifurcated handle, fundamental chapter of the canon in his song catalog (“Redneck Mother”), and enough wild hairs in his past to qualify him as a legend. But along the way, his attention began to leave matters extraneous to his art and soul by the wayside and focus on the beauty and potential to be found in the blank canvas of, in his case, the yet to be written and recorded song. The result has been one of the most satisfying musical and lyrical journeys to witness over the last two decades. Time: 8:00pm. Admission: $22 Advance / $25 Day of Show. Age restrictions: 19+ After 10 pm. Box office: 319-688-2653. Buy tickets |
